Who We Are
1974–1975: Founding & First Run
The Kansas City Pioneers were founded in 1974 by seven leather men who brought their motorcycle club roots from Dallas to KC. Their first official “run” took place in 1975 in the backyard of founding members Bill Dugger and Jim White—a tradition that continues to this day.
1980s: Crisis & Care
As the AIDS epidemic devastated the queer community, the Pioneers shifted focus toward fundraising and support. Their events became lifelines, raising money and awareness for those affected while deepening bonds of brotherhood and care.
1990s–2000s: Growth & Outreach
The club expanded its reach, partnering with local organizations like MGRA Rodeo and KC Pride. Leather Runs, campouts, and community events became staples, and the Pioneers began contributing to charities supporting LGBTQ+ youth, HIV services, and anti-violence initiatives.
2010s: Education & Inclusion
In 2017, the Pioneers launched a new educational program to welcome those exploring leather and BDSM culture. Workshops, socials, and mentorship opportunities opened doors for newcomers and deepened community ties.
Today: Tradition Meets Visibility
Now based at Missie B’s in Midtown KC, the Pioneers continue to host events, fundraisers, and leather shows that celebrate identity, service, and joy. Their leather shop and trophy case honor decades of connection with sister clubs across the country. As Kansas City’s oldest LGBTQIA charity, the Pioneers remain committed to visibility, inclusion, and unapologetic pride.
